- In 2020, Jones voted to require Virginia’s Department of Education (VDOE) to create “model policies” for school boards for the treatment of transgender students. H.B. 145
- The VDOE policy allowed students to use gender pronouns and a name that reflects their gender identity and use school bathrooms, changing facilities, and locker rooms that conform to their gender identity.
- The guidelines also say schools should let students participate in gender-specific programs or activities, such as physical education, overnight field trips, and intramural sports, that correspond with their gender identities.
- The policy stated, “school divisions should accept a student’s assertion of their gender identity without requiring any substantiating evidence, including diagnosis, treatment, or legal documents.
- According to the model policy, if a student does not want to share with their parents their gender identity, the school system should respect the student’s request and work with the student to help them share the information with their parents when they feel it is the time to do so.
